How to Entertain a Toddler on a Flight

Air travel with a toddler can be hard.  There’s lots of emotions to manage.  Some toddlers are overcome with excitement about flying. It’s not uncommon to see a toddler with their face smushed up against the glass airport window staring at the airplane they can’t wait to board.

Others are riddled with anxiety and uncertain of what to expect. Regardless of their emotion, it’s important to be prepared for the flight itself.

While your little one might be bursting with different emotions pre-boarding, once you’re on the plane and you’re buckled in for the long haul, you’re entering a completely different territory.  You want to make sure your toddler has something to focus on that can monopolize their attention…unless they’re napping.

And speaking of napping, make sure they’re wearing something comfy and be sure to bring a blanket, pillow and maybe a favorite stuffed animal. A sleeping toddler is a quiet toddler!

Okay, back to entertaining your toddler.

Don’t be afraid to bust out the tablet.  We all know that we should limit screen time, but flying is an exception to the rule. Whether you put on their favorite show/movie or let them play games, this will definitely help keep your toddler occupied.

Don’t underestimate the window seat.  This one is important.  Add a little bit of fun to the window and bring some gel clings that your child can play with while they look out the window and marvel at the world below.

Pack a few of your child’s favorite books – or maybe get a new book for the flight to really hold his or her attention. Sticker books are very entertaining too. Just make sure the stickers stay IN the book and not on the seat. Or window. Or tray table. Or armrest. Or floor. *wink*

Coloring is also a great option when you’re on a flight because you can ask your child to draw the airplane, or their destination and help get them hyped for what’s to come.

It’s also important you come prepared with snacks and the essentials – wipes, the favorite stuffed animal, a pillow and maybe even a blanket.

If you are able to maintain a level of organization and entertainment, the skies will be a very friendly place for you and your children.
