Tips for Traveling with Kids

Traveling with kids? The idea of traveling with children can be daunting. From what to pack to avoiding tantrums, it can be chockfull with uncertainties. Here are some expert tips to help you prepare and save you from going crazy along the way.

Stop thinking about it and start doing it!
First and foremost, just do it. We know that the idea of traveling with kids might be overwhelming, but the most important thing to keep in mind is that you will get there and it will be worth it. Go ahead, book that flight!

Book ahead and book wisely
Hotel or vacation rental? Vacation rentals are great for kids because you can make it your home away from home. You can prepare your own meals which is especially handy if you’ve got a picky eater or a child with a special diet. Additionally, you will likely have more space than if you stay in a hotel. That being said, if you’re going to be staying in a hotel, take your time researching before you book. Check reviews to see if other parents have stayed there with their children and make sure their stay was enjoyable for everyone. Reviewers have great insights.

Plan Flights Sensibly
Flights around bedtime are always a good idea. A sleeping child is a blessing for everyone. If you have a connecting flight, give yourself plenty of time at the connecting airport as you don’t want to be making a mad dash with your kids and luggage in tow. Try to make the journey a part of the destination.

Pack Wisely
Remember that almost anything can be purchased abroad. Don’t worry about not packing enough snacks (for example). You can probably buy more snacks, if needed, at your destination. Your carry-on should have all the essentials: baby wipes, pacifiers, diapers, snacks, change of clothes, plastic bags (for diapers and dirty clothes), antibacterial wipes, medicine, games & toys, pillow, entertainment (like a tablet), power packs, headphones, etc. You should also check the weather ahead of time and be prepared with appropriate clothing. If possible, leave the car seat behind. Most car rental agencies offer car seats.

Research and more research!
If you’re traveling abroad, your child will need a passport. You should also check on things like whether your child will need a visa or shots prior to your departure. Make sure you also check out the customs in the country you are visiting and educate your child or children appropriately. Be aware that breastfeeding in public is not okay in every country, they require you to go somewhere private.

Explain
Explain the journey to your kids so they know what to expect. Talk them through everything that is going to happen from packing, to security, to the flight, to getting to the actual destination. Most kids are excited about flying so it’s great to encourage their adventurous attitude!

Give yourself plenty of time
Check-in online to minimize time spent waiting at the airport. Double check your flight status in advance to make sure the flight is on-time and leave home with plenty of time to spare.

Keep calm and go with the flow
You may be accustomed to rushing off the plane and then hurrying through the airport, taking every short cut along the way. Well guess what? It’s not going to happen like that with kids. The best think you can do is sit back, relax and go with the flow. Let everyone around you do all the rushing. Yes, your child might have the inevitable meltdown, but all you can do is take a deep breath, remain calm and try to soothe your child. You will enjoy yourself more if you let go.

ENJOY!
Remember, this is supposed to be fun. Don’t stress too much and be sure to enjoy yourself!
